Mandorla

Mandorla is a medieval Italian term denoting the heart-like symbol consisting of two overlapping ovals/circles, where the almond-shaped area in the center gives name to the whole symbol (Mandorla stands for the Almond in Italian). It represents the overlapping (i.e. unity) of two otherwise separate domains, for example, of the left and right, of the dark and light, of the consciousness and the unconsciousness, human and god, The central area is the unity of heteregeneous natures, symbolising the transcedence of both.
